A Practical Guide to Managing Redundancies
Full or half-day options
A highly practical and participative course, providing the legal and practical knowledge to manage a redundancy process, together with best practice. Minimising the effect on employees, providing adequate consultation and maintaining good employee relations are vital issues for any business. This programme can be run as either a half day or one day workshop. The one-day event allows for more case study and group work.
Redundancies have become a major issue for many Line Managers and HR advisers. This course looks at the process of redundancies, from the business need, through the consultation procedures to selection criteria and dismissal. This will be a practical course with a problem solving case study approach. It considers alternatives to redundancies, such as short time working, reduced days and hours, and also the outcomes, including payments, tax implications and compromise settlements.
Course content includes:
- Business reasons for redundancy
- Considering alternatives to redundancy
- Consultation and selection – legal requirements and good practice
- Following fair procedures
- Collective redundancies
- Redundancy payments
- Recent Case Law and pitfalls
As a separate workshop, we can also arrange for your Managers to be given training in how to handle the redundancy meetings. These are not easy to conduct at all, even for the most experienced of Managers. Employee reaction on being told they are at risk of redundancy varies – from shock; disbelief; anger; resignation, tears and even laughter.
Breaking the news; responding appropriately to employee reactions and questions; communicating the selection criteria and any matrix scores etc. We use a series of exercises to allow managers to practice in the safe environment of the training room. As with a number of our events, the use of actors in a role-play environment can be used to enhance the realism of the skill rehearsal exercises.
